Lennard Advances in a Battle to the Buzzer
Tuesday evening, two Southshore rivals, Lennard and Riverview HS, battled it out on the hardwood in the opening round of the 7A District 11 playoffs, and it didn’t disappoint.
After falling behind by more than 20 points, the Lennard Longhorns mounted a second-half comeback for the ages. Led by senior guard Devin Freeman, Lennard rallied to pull off a dramatic one-point victory and punch their ticket to the semifinals.
Devin delivered a show-stopping performance, finishing with 14 points, 10 steals, and 8 assists, doing a little bit of everything when it mattered most. Moises Abreu and Nathan Jorden each added double-digit scoring, while Shawn Bryant helped keep the postseason run alive with 9 points and 8 rebounds.
Lennard will now face Plant High School on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Plant, with a spot in the District Championship game on the line. The title game is scheduled for Saturday.
Other Southshore teams are still very much in the hunt. Sumner earned a quarterfinal bye and will take on Palm Harbor University on Thursday. East Bay also advanced after a win over Southeast and will now face Braden River in the semifinals.
Plenty of Southshore basketball still to be played. Stay tuned for more updates, and let’s hear it for our local schools chasing a district title and a shot at a state championship.
